As promised, Laura made the peach pie and a dinner that neither of them ate. They chatted, but the tension was thick between them. He asked her to spend the night with him in the main house. Still in shock that she was losing him so soon, she nodded, not trusting her own voice. She wanted to be honest, tell him she loved him, but it wasn’t the right time. He’d already left her. He wore his grief on his face, renewed tragedy for his lost family.

She lay on his bed watching as he methodically emptied each and every drawer. Every item he folded brought their inevitable separation closer. She listened as he complained and worried about leaving The Bay Shore. Eventually, he talked about the trial and how awful it would be. He quietly told her he feared returning to the townhouse where he’d lived with his wife and son. He talked openly about his fears and sadness. He talked about everything, but them.

When he turned out the lights and pulled her close, she went into his arms eagerly. Vowing to enjoy their last few hours together, she committed every inch of him to memory, and most of all, tried to convey everything she felt for him as they quietly made love.

“You’re leaving in two weeks yourself,” he offered later as he spooned her.

“Yes,” she replied meekly as if her leaving would make any difference.

“All those young minds waiting to be molded…I wish I’d had a math teacher who looked like you,” he said, rubbing his hand slowly down her back.

“I’m known for being tough and a hard grader. I bet you were good at math.”

“I was. You’re not tough, you’re passionate.”

“My students wouldn’t agree with that assessment,” she said with a sad chuckle.

“Geometry was my favorite.” Adam said.

“Mine, too,” she replied and turned toward him, deciding to put her feelings on the line. “Have you thought about staying here? Maybe managing The Bay Shore? It’s not anywhere close to being done.”

“This has just been a break for me. My boss has already arranged for a replacement who will arrive next week. I haven’t decided what I want to do,” he answered.

She shut her eyes and felt pain to her very core. His coming back was the only thread of hope she had been clinging to for the last few hours.

“I ran away to escape, Laura. Maybe it’s time I dealt with it, so I can move on.”

“I think you’ve come a long way since I’ve known you.”

“Some ways yes and some ways no.” Adam was quiet for a moment and then said, “Is it acceptable that I can only be your friend and lover, but not your boyfriend? I want to be more to you Laura, but I can’t right now. This is all I can give, and you deserve so much more.”

The unexpected heartfelt declaration hit a raw nerve. “Let’s give it some time, stay in touch every now and then,” she replied, her heart hurting.

Ignoring her
